This article has come from the IC Network, a very prominent support group for IC patients. The ICN site has not been supportive of treatment approaches used for IC that are not mainstream and have been in use for years. Now they are opening up slightly and are saying Lyme Disease should be considered for those who are not improving. This is a very significant step for the ICN to admit a new approach to a possible cause for IC symptoms. It has been proposed for years by other sources, just as a bacterial cause has been, but up until now neither has been accepted by the leaders of the group.

Lyme Disease is another good example of the need for very good testing and for years this was missing. Now there are some labs that have very good tests and it has made a big difference in the realization that there could be a connection. Lyme co-infections can be present and even though Lyme has been treated with a month or so of an antibiotic symptoms may return later. So chronic Lyme is another possibility but this is still not universally accepted among the doctors treating Lyme.
