PostSubject: Intracellular Bacterial Communities (IBC)   Sat Apr 23, 2016 7:25 pm

Researchers in the US (Scott Hultgren) have been writing about Intracellular Bacterial Communities (IBCs) involved in chronic and recurrent UTIs since at least 2004. They have proven that Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) can and does invade bladder epithelial cells, setting up quiescent intracellular reservoirs (QIRs) inside the bladder where they can continue to divide, thrive and re-infect healthy cells. "The internalized UPEC can clonally replicate into biofilm-like intracellular bacterial communities (IBCs) of thousands of bacteria while avoiding many host clearance mechanisms. Importantly, IBCs have been documented in urine from women and children suffering acute UTI."

Will the Marshall team be looking into the possibility of IBCs being involved in IC/PBS?

This explains alot about recuring UTIs and maybe a link with IC but there are many people with IC or bladder pain who have never had a positive UTI.

I find this topic fascinating.

This article explains the way some bacteria explode when they die and the contents they leave behind helps feed remaining bacteria and forms/strengthens biofilm. This new research comes from a collaboration between scientists in Australia, Japan and Switzerland.
