The lyme bacteria (borrelia) and bartonella are frequently on the same tick that infects someone and that's why bartonella is frequently referred to as a co-infection of lyme. But bartonella is really far more prevalent than borrelia since it's everywhere on the planet and has been around for thousands of years. Also bartonella can be transmitted via any biting insect. Cats frequently carry it and infect their owners. Very few conventional doctors in the US know about it and are therefore very unlikely to properly diagnose it. The lyme literate doctors who treat it never accept insurance so the cost of treatment is a big problem for many in the US.

Gee thanks Sugajay, seems to be more info coming from members of forums than our GPs. My GP (new one I sacked the last one LOL) smiled and said sorry I really know very little about IC. With so many people effected by this rotten illness you would think more GPs would be interested in learning about it. I know Medicare here in Aus would not cover tests they only cover the very basics, so as I said sadly sending more samples to the US is not possible on top of which every doctor I have tried to show the test results from Pathogenics to have totally dismissed them and wouldnt even look at them.

It's not much better here. Urologists will still tell you that there's no known cause of IC and will only (try to) treat the symptoms. While the urologist was treating my daughter's symptoms, the bacteria was slowly invading the rest of her body. And of course none of our "medical specialists" recognized that her bladder, stomach, joint, and brain problems were all due to the same bacteria.

Yes I understand. When I had my first visit with the new GP he went through his "tick list" to see what I knew about IC and one question on his list was - and what causes IC ? LOL Oh if only I knew that I could help so many people.

There are many potential triggers for this disease. I really wish that people stop looking at it as a bladder disease. It's not a coincidence that people with bladder pain also have Fibro, chronic fatigue, depression, a boat load of other auto immune diseases. It is triggered by a virus or bacteria, some suggest even epstein barr virus or herpes simplex which then takes out the bladder and brain and stomach and other organs. Please don't look at the bladder in isolation. Lyme, or virus, or bacteria - something triggers it off and it takes over. Here is a research article suggesting a virus causing ulcers in some forms of IC.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24973060

Even if it's a virus or bacteria. Scientists can't kill viruses in the body nor can they kill many forms of bacteria. Whatever the cause i how they work it out.

So Sugajay what good did it do finding out about the infection in your daughter. So they found the pathogens but did it help her to get this condition under control?

If you refer back to an earlier post of mine, you'll see that I said that my daughter can now void without straining. IC is only one of many manifestations of her bartonella infection and the clindamycin/mycobutin protocal she's on seems to be attacking the bartonella everywhere in her body.

Did anyone else manage to see the ABC's Catalyst show on ticks and lyme-like illness in Australia?  It was very interesting.  Of particular interest was the interview with Eva Sapi on biofilms.  I can't help but wonder if perhaps biofilms play a role in ICBPS, making it hard to identify a causative bacteria?  I know that there are people being treated for lyme and lyme co-infections in the US and it is clearing up their bladder problems at the same time.

Here is the link if you'd like to watch the show.  http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/stories/4494187.htm

Here is Eva Sapi on biofilms and lyme - very interesting.

I did watch this on Catalyst! Another example of WA leading the way.

I've also heard of (and personally talked to) people diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease who also have chronic UTIs (diagnosed as IC), and their symptoms slowly resolve with long-term treatment for their Lyme disease. I've not heard off it ever being a quick fix for anyone - it involves long-term treatment. This is in the US of course, people aren't often diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease here in AUS - and the Catalyst programme explains why.

I'll watch the Eva Sapi biofilm interview today if my internet lets me. Thanks for sharing
